Valetudo Rubor in Hell's Precipice, he's one of those Hand/Fist creatures.

Isn't this skill obsolete as you could just have a Fiery Bowstring?

Wow, don't try to think outside the box now.

Set up GF. Now all your party members and enemies have fire damage.

Set up Spirit of Winter. Now all damage done is cold.

Make sure you and your party are wearing cold resistant gear and voila, all damage you take is reduced heavily.

The other team won't expect it or the enemies you're fighting won't have resists to cold (if you're fighting in the right area with this set up).

There's more to it than just your own weapon.

Ummmm... your whole party wearing cold resistance gear? Now we're getting into buying stuff, and for the most part depending upon the ranger's gear for that.

.. also, since everyone is then using cold-based attacks, spells like Spinal Shivers become more interesting.

if you use GF then why dont you just make sure your team has fire-resistant armor instead of cold?

GF makes all physical attacks turn into fire attacks(which are elemental)
Winter makes all elemental attacks turn into cold attacks
Now, all attacks(whether it be a weapon or an elemental spell) do cold damage.

Rangers and Eles have armor which is strong vs cold
Mesmers have mantra of Frost, which can make cold attacks do almost half as much damage than normal.

This is a strategy in many pvp areas that works well. Two rangers pooping those out and the guild is prepared with their cold resist gear and mesmers with mantra of frost.

Add to what someone above said about spinal shivers and you have some very interesting tactics on hand. How often do you go into GvG expecting an all cold element battle?

Ya, I see. I just joined a guild a while ago, and I realise that this is a valid strategy. When you said "Gear" I thought you meant gear, as in the stuff you wear... not a spell!!! (gear is not a spell). Ya, the strategy revolves around mantra of frost on almost everyone (except the warriors) and having winter out. Greater Conflig is good to have, but not 100% necessary.

also i hav figured out a perfect ranger build but my bow string is already in use and i cant use ignite arrows for reasons i wish not to share at this moment in time so it is the only real way to deal extra damage and i think you all probly know extra damage is good

Another thing to do is have an ele with ward against harm and GC (no winter). Ward against harm gives wonderful bonuses against fire damage. Its certainly useful in PvE.

As well, i find this skill useful when mixed with storm chaser, and dryders defense. They both give bonuses against elemental attacks, and, as this skill turns all physical damage, into fire, it helps you.

-Dryders Defense give Extra armor versus elemental attacks
-Storm Chaser gives energy when your hit by elemental attacks.

I find it a very useful spell.

Based on the skill listing here (assumes both they are accurate still and that the wording itself is the way they work):

Skills majorly changed by Winter:
Glimmering Mark is useless
Thunderclap is useless
Iron Mist causes complete invulnerability
Mark of Rodgort is useless
Ice Prison can't be ended early by fire damage
Mantra of Frost becomes powerful, while the other elemental Mantras are worthless
Spinal Shivers more likely to be triggered

Skills majorly changed by Greater Conflagration:
The downside of Grasping Earth is removed
Kinetic Armor is useless
Mark of Rodgort is more likely to be triggered
Armor of Frost downside becomes bigger
Ice Prison more likely to be ended early by fire damage
Ward Against Harm becomes more powerful
Elemental Resistance becomes more powerful and has no downside
Mantra of Flame becomes more powerful
Physical Resistance becomes a disadvantage
Healing Hands is useless
Essence Bond is useless
Dark Bond is useless
Barbs is useless
Mark of Pain is useless
Weaken Armor is useless
The main use of Symbiotic Bond is useless
Dryder's Defenses improves some
Storm Chaser is more likely to be triggered
Winnowing becomes useless
Winter makes cold damage the standard for all damage that doesn't ignore armor
And perhaps the biggest thing: Warrior armor +AL vs. physical becomes useless, while Ranger +AL vs. Elemental defends against everything that doesn't ingore armor and mage weapons

Greater Conflagration is definitely the more powerful spirit of the two. Though Nature's Renewal still blows it out of the water in PvP.

Winter just turn all elemental damage into frost. So in the end, you can still take physical or elemental damage. GF turn physical damage into fire one, so both physical and elemental are now elemental damage. As deathblade said, rangers have very usefulls skills against elemental attacks, + every ranger armors give you +30AC vs elemental... Excepting the armor +15vs frost, rangers don't care if they are hit by frost,lightning,... This skill make you harder to kill, winter doesn't. (talking about ranger skills only of course)

Awesome against undead as well. Undead take much more damage from this than physical damage. Great against heavy-armor tank mobs as well.
